Medgar Evers' Shaun Dietz and Nicola Martial to be Inducted Into Armory Coaches Hall of Fame at AT&T Hall of Fame Invitational

The track and field program at Medgar Evers College Preparatory School was in its infancy when Shaun Dietz and Nicola Martial took the coaching reigns in 2002. Since then the school has become known as one of the most consistently high performing sprint programs in New York.

Dietz began his coaching career in 1996 at Theodore Roosevelt High School and had a short stint at Bronx High School of Science before landing at Medgar Evers. He studied kinesiology at Lehman College, and brings a wealth of biomechanical and track and field knowledge to his athletes. Dietz was a multi-sport athlete, competing in track and field, table tennis and even Jamaica’s bobsled team.

Martial’s athletes could not ask for a better role model. While at the University of Nebraska, she was a three-time NCAA Champion and went on to compete in the World Championships and Olympics for Guyana in the triple jump. She is also a graduate of Seton Hall University’s School of Law.

“Being inducted into the Armory Coaches Hall of Fame is a great honor,” said Dietz. “From day one, Nicola and I have worked to become the best at what we do, so for The Armory to recognize us in this way has made us very happy.”

On paper, Dietz heads the boys and Martial heads the girls, but in actuality, the two share coaching duties across both squads.

When asked to recall their favorite coaching memories, Dietz and Martial both talked about their first trips to nationals as coaches. During the 2005 National Scholastic Indoor Championships at The Armory, their girls team took second in the 4x200m relay and went on to win the 4x100m relay at the ensuing Nike Outdoor Nationals.

Dietz and Martial also fondly recall watching the growth and development of Kadecia Baird. She was regarded as the nation’s best 400m runner after breaking New York’s 20-year-old 400m state record with 51.04 (#5 US all-time) at the 2012 World Junior Championships. Like Martial, Baird is of Guyanese decent and went on to compete at the University of Nebraska.

All together, the Medgar Evers girls team currently hold New York state records in the indoor 300m, 4x200m relay and 4x400m relay, as well as the outdoor 400m, 4x100m relay, and 800m sprint medley relay.

The two attribute their coaching success to their ability to collaborate and instill confidence, dedication and track and field knowledge into their athletes.

“I call Shaun my researcher,” says Martial. “He has a great knack for the science behind track and field and is always learning so that he can help the athletes be the best they can be.”

Because of all they’ve done for the Medgar Evers track and field program, Dietz and Martial will be inducted into the Armory Coaches Hall of Fame during the AT&T Hall of Fame Invitational on December 19. The six coaches listed below will be inducted as well.

Joe Biddy Suffern (NY)

Andy Capellan New Rochelle (NY)

Steve Borbet Bay Shore (NY)

Mike Glynn Ridgewood (NJ)

Art Kranick Saratoga Springs (NY)

Linda Kranick Saratoga Springs (NY)

We will release bio information on each of the inductees during the weeks leading up to the AT&T Hall of Fame Invitational

The AT&T Hall of Fame Invitational is expected to draw over 3,000 competitors from high schools across the Northeast. Athletes will compete in varsity, frosh/soph, small and large school divisions. Schools with less than 525 boys or girls in grades 9-11 will compete in the small schools division. Each athlete will be allowed to compete in three events and there will be no limit on the number of team entries per event.

The Winner of the AT&T Hall of Fame Invitational boys and girls miles will receive an invitation to the NYRR Millrose Games High School mile if they have broken 4:20/5:00 at some point in their career as of 1/24/16. Otherwise those invitations become “at large” bids.

The meet will also feature the unveiling of a brand new Armory Coaches Hall of Fame display and launch of our new field event results displays system, which consists of double-sided, live result scoreboards at each field event.

Meet entry is available on the AT&T Hall of Fame Invitational meet page
