Steve Borbet says being hired as the girls track and field coach at Bay Shore in 1975 was the second best thing that ever happened to him. The first was his wife, who has been coaching cross country at Smithtown High School for 15 years, and his children.

Borbet led more championship teams than any other coach, in any other sport, in Suffolk County history. They’ve won seven individual and relay national titles, as well as 39 Suffolk Country Championships. In 2004, his girls broke the national outdoor DMR record.

One of Borbet’s fondest coaching memories came during 2012’s New Balance Nationals Outdoor, where he was awarded the National Coach of the Year in-between his team winning the sprint medley relay and his star hurdler, Jessica Gelibert, winning the 400m hurdles.

Another major measure of Borbet’s success, is that over 65 of his former athletes went on to become coaches.

Because of his tireless dedication to track and field, Borbet, along with the seven coaches listed below will be inducted into the Armory Coaches Hall of Fame during the AT&T Hall of Fame Invitational on December 19.

Joe Biddy Suffern (NY)

Andy Capellan New Rochelle (NY)

Shaun Dietz Medgar Evers (NY)

Mike Glynn Ridgewood (NJ)

Art Kranick Saratoga Springs (NY)

Linda Kranick Saratoga Springs (NY)

Nicola Martial Medgar Evers (NY)

We will release bio information on each of the inductees during the weeks leading up to the AT&T Hall of Fame Invitational

The AT&T Hall of Fame Invitational is expected to draw over 3,000 competitors from high schools across the Northeast. Athletes will compete in varsity, frosh/soph, small and large school divisions. Schools with less than 525 boys or girls in grades 9-11 will compete in the small schools division. Each athlete will be allowed to compete in three events and there will be no limit on the number of team entries per event.

The Winner of the AT&T Hall of Fame Invitational boys and girls miles will receive an invitation to the NYRR Millrose Games High School mile if they have broken 4:20/5:00 at some point in their career as of 1/24/16. Otherwise those invitations become “at large” bids.

The meet will also feature the unveiling of a brand new Armory Coaches Hall of Fame display and launch of our new field event results displays system, which consists of double-sided, live result scoreboards at each field event.

Meet entry is available on the AT&T Hall of Fame Invitational meet page

With great pride as one of Steve Borbet's 65 former athletes gone on to become Coaches, it gives me immeasurable pleasure to attend the Hall of Fame Classic with my Hauppauge HS team! Being there to honor my Coach, his success and the success of the other great inductee's will be an exciting event. Plus capping it off with a fabulous Track Meet just puts the icing on the cake especially because I know there is nothing any of these coaches care about more! Congratulations to all the 2016 Inductee's!
