Andy Capellan started out as a football coach in 1971 and began his track and field coaching career at Stuyvesant High School in 1975. He remained there for five years before moving to New Rochelle High School, where he is now in his 36^th year as the girls head track and field coach. Over the years his teams have won 44 County Championships, as well as 50 League titles and 37 Sectional Championships for Section One Class A/AA across the indoor and outdoor seasons.

Coach Cap, as he is commonly referred to, has produced multiple New York State and National Champions, most recently Elizabeth Mott, who won the 400m hurdles at Nike Nationals in 2008.

One of his fondest Armory memories came from watching Shenae Dawkins progress to win a national title in the long jump before taking third in the triple jump in 2001’s National Scholastic Indoor Championships. Dawkins would come back the following year to win the 60m hurdles and take second in the triple jump.

Because of his unwavering dedication to track and field, Capellan, along with the seven coaches listed below will be inducted into the Armory Coaches Hall of Fame during the AT&T Hall of Fame Invitational on December 19.

The AT&T Hall of Fame Invitational is expected to draw over 3,000 competitors from high schools across the Northeast. Athletes will compete in varsity, frosh/soph, small and large school divisions. Schools with less than 525 boys or girls in grades 9-11 will compete in the small schools division. Each athlete will be allowed to compete in three events and there will be no limit on the number of team entries per event. 

The Winner of the AT&T Hall of Fame Invitational boys and girls miles will receive an invitation to the NYRR Millrose Games High School mile if they have broken 4:20/5:00 at some point in their career as of 1/24/16. Otherwise those invitations become “at large” bids.

The meet will also feature the unveiling of a brand new Armory Coaches Hall of Fame display and launch of our new field event results displays system, which consists of double-sided, live result scoreboards at each field event.
